Friendly URLs Are Here

Good news:  we've finally made it -- friendly URLs are now activated for all LMU.edu Web sites.  For anyone wondering why this seemingly straightforward issue had so many layers of complexity involved, we'll have to take that conversation offline.  Suffice to say that this milestone involved the Web team, Information Technology staff, various departments around campus and even a computer science professor thrown into the mix for good measure.  After several software, CMS, server and database upgrades to the Web and various other under-the-hood changes that only the extreme technonerds of us appreciate, the struggle for non-numeric web address randomness is over.

Of course, life would be too easy if that's all that needed to be said.  With our Web site in the 1/2 a million range and roughly 60,000 of them dynamically managed by our CMS, there are bound to be issues with any change.  For example, with numbered URLs, the character length of the URL was predictably short (even if it meant nothing other than a database number).  With friendly URLs, certain sites that are extremely deep (containing numerous generations of children pages), friendly URLs begin to exceed the maximum allowed length of our Web browsers.  This has affected an extremely small number of pages on LMU.edu.  If you are affected or have observed any other mysterious behavior as a result of recent upgrades, visit http://www.lmu.edu/reportabug to tell us.

If you're interested and want to get your "geek" on, we've set up a page that explains the terminology of vanity vs. friendly URLs.  Just go to http://www.lmu.edu/befriendly.  Enjoy.

Winding Up Friendly URLs

In conjunction with a major upgrade of LMU's content management system (CMS), the remaining 20 percent (or so) of university subdomains will be converted to friendly URLs by the end of April. Topping the list are www.LMU.edu and its many subsections, and Bellarmine College (bellarmine.lmu.edu). Also affected will be Von der Ahe Library.

A form will be posted at http://www.lmu.edu/reportabug where users can report any troubles they run into, post-conversion. Of course, if you encounter any show-stopping errors ("Ack! My site disappeared") contact your Web Manager directly.

By way of reminder, the rest of LMU's sites were converted to friendly URLs last summer, with Seaver College of Science and Engineering kicking things off in August.

CFA is A-OK

Mcavatar2 I enabled friendly URLs for CFA, and they're working fine.

As part of the recent subdomains work Matt Bazar conducted in IT, Undergraduate Admission is now search engine-friendly, I'm happy to report. My remaining big clients fall generally under the LMU.edu umbrella, so will be taken live when we take the parent site live with this functionality. Bellarmine College in particular comes to mind. But soo too the Campaign for LMU/Giving site.

SFTV Launches

Avatar

sftv.lmu.edu has successfully enabled friendly urls. SOE will be the next area I tackle, with an expected launch date of November 3rd. CBA and MBA remain on the back-burner, due to the complexity of mba.lmu.edu being a part of CBA on the backend.

I am contacting Active.com today to see if there is an easy way to copy and transfer sites to their own areas. At the very least, we're hoping for a script from Active that will allow us to do this. This will take an area like graduate.lmu.edu, that is a part of www.lmu.edu, and separate it out completely, allowing for a smooth transistion to friendly urls.

Friendly Remains

[Firefox and IE] When you visit CSE and go back to LMU the address will remain cse.lmu.edu and only the pade ID will change. For example, navigating from cse.lmu.edu to lmu.edu (via links on cse) changes the address of LMU.edu to http://cse.lmu.edu/page11.aspx.

Curiously, this does not happen with kxlu.com. Ben's on it.

Adding URL Titles to CFA/SOE

LimonFollowing Ben and Amy's success, I'm preparing both CFA and SOE for the flip-switch. I'm adding URL titles to top level pages. The next step will be to confirm with M. Bazar that they're ready to go, flip, and wait for the response. Any ideas on how to roll these out? Or is it a free for all now?

Seaver College Now Live

Seaver College is now operating with 100% search engine-friendly URLs. The site went live Tuesday, and so far no glitches discovered (or reported). As more pages receive manual creation of URL titles, the really long ones with tons of underscores will go away.

KXLU Sets the Stage

Avatar

Due to its smaller page count, KXLU has been my current focus for friendly urls. We enabled friendlys on the live KXLU. After working out a few kinks, the urls worked perfectly and KXLU is complete. That said, I've inquired about the "Site29" in the homepage url to see if it can be removed. http://www.kxlu.com

Thank you to Matt Bazar for helping push this forward and congrats to KXLU on being the first site converted to friendly urls! Yah team!
